An equally upset K S Ravi Kumar, director of Jaggubhai, says, “We gave the tape for post-production work with the watermark and that particular copy went missing. It was later put up on the Internet. What’s more, the pirated version even has the ‘rights reserved’ line mentioned.”
So, where does the problem lie and who is to be blamed? “A filmmaker often finds himself at the mercy of several agencies during the process of dubbing, recording, and adding special effects. The problem is that we do not enter into agreements with these studios. It’s time the producers council took steps to curb the menace and prevent such leaks,” states director Cheran.
However, actor Kamal Haasan blames it on the weak piracy laws. “I was in a similar situation during the release of Vikram. I complained to the then CM and the person responsible for the leak was promptly put behind bars. However, to my surprise, he was released the very next day because of weak laws.”
