Tamil film industry has up to now been fed on the persona of the hero who is larger-than-life which does not have an ounce of realism to whatever he does. These masala movies have been the highest grosser, but the trend seems to be now changing. The way a hero is perceived by the Tamil crowd is now undergoing a change and the directors seem to like this and are turning more towards realism. Even at the box-office many movies which have portrayed a real-life type of hero has fared quite nicely and this goes to show that the people's mindset is changing.
Although this may be so there are still directors who disagree about this trend and still believe in the magic of the larger-than-life hero. Director Sundar C is one such director, and he is of the opinion that you cannot still write-off the unrealistic hero as many people are in awe of such figures and would miss them on the silver screen.
